How to Style Autumn at Home

As the light begins to mellow and evenings draw in, I always find myself craving comfort – that quiet pull to slow down, hibernating a little, and surrounding myself with warmth and texture. There’s nothing better than retreating to a home that wraps around you like your favourite jumper giving you a hug.

Autumn is the season that invites you to layer up – in your wardrobe, yes, but especially at home. It’s the moment to reset: to glow, to ground, and to create spaces that feel protective and full of soul.

This year’s trend palette is all about depth and warmth – think Rust, Ochre, Caramel, Claret and Amber. Gone are the flat beiges and cool greys; instead, we’re embracing colour and comfort in equal measure. Every store is brimming with earthy tones – rich browns, soft pinks, and tactile finishes, from corduroy cushions and faux-fur textures at The White Company to hand-thrown ceramics and amber glass at M&S. It’s never been easier to bring autumn home.

Layer up your Living Space

Start with your sofa – the easiest place to transition the season. Swap out cushions in lighter linens, pastels and summer prints for richer fabrics that bring warmth and tactility. I’ve layered soft ochres and terracotta’s with chunky knits and rust velvets – the perfect mix of tone and texture.

Tip: Mixing materials is key. Combine bouclé, velvet and chunky knits with dark woods and artisanal ceramics to balance softness with structure.

And don’t underestimate lighting. Turn off the “eyeburner” overhead light and create small pockets of glow throughout the room. Add warmth from low to high – table lamps, wall sconces, and candles build that golden, cocooning atmosphere even on the dullest day. I’ve added touches of chrome in my candlesticks from H&M HOME this year; the cool metal contrasts beautifully with rich tones and adds a subtle mid-century polish.

Tip: Cluster candles in odd numbers and vary their heights – from wall sconces to mantels and side tables – for a more natural, layered look.

Create a Cosy Bedroom Sanctuary

Your bedroom deserves the same seasonal attention. Texture here is everything. Swap summer linens for cosy brushed cotton or jersey, and layer the bed with velvet quilts or wool blankets for an instant sense of comfort.

I’ve updated mine with winter floral cushions from H&M HOME and cool corduroy bolsters for that boutique-hotel feel. I’m loving the new heritage-inspired florals in rich tones of brown, ochre and pink that feel nostalgic yet timeless.

Even small swaps make a big impact: artwork in deeper hues or a new bedside lamp from John Lewis & Partners can completely shift the mood. If space allows, add a little reading nook – a cosy chair, a soft blanket and a candle or diffuser from Oliver Bonas on a side table. These quiet corners create the ultimate sense of retreat.

Style with Seasonal Blooms

Nothing says the season more than the blooms – autumn reveals itself through flowers in full, rich colour. I’ve swapped summer stems for oversized dahlias, Chinese lanterns and berries from Primark HOME – the kind of seasonal flowers that capture everything we love about this time of year, in deep rust, amber and plum tones that instantly add warmth and autumn glow.

Tip: Always arrange blooms in odd numbers – threes or fives feel more balanced and organic.

Display them in handmade earthenware pots or sculptural vases, like this one from M&S – the slightly imperfect, hand-crafted pieces that add soul and texture to a room. Their natural finishes contrast beautifully with polished surfaces and bring instant depth.

Add Warmth through Scent and Touch

Design with all the senses in mind. Never underestimate the power of scent – candles and diffusers with notes of sandalwood, amber or cedar can shift the atmosphere faster than a paintbrush ever could. A room that speaks to your senses changes how you feel within it, and Rituals, The White Company, and Molton Brown have you covered.

You don’t need a full overhaul to embrace autumn.

Because sometimes the smallest changes – swapping a few cushions, adding an extra blanket, or introducing a new scent – can completely transform how your home feels.

"This is your reminder to slow down, layer up, and let your home glow a little warmer this season."
