How to Style Autumn at Home

As the season turns, there’s a natural shift towards richer colour, softer textures and interiors that feel a little more inviting. Autumn is the perfect excuse to introduce deeper tones into the home, adding warmth and character without changing everything at once.

Think garnet, burgundy, chocolate brown and amber, softened with tactile fabrics and brought to life with candlelight and polished chrome accents. From a vase or cushion to a beautifully set table, it’s the little changes that can shift the mood of a room, or even a whole home.

This season’s palette is deeper, warmer and full of character. Here’s how to bring it home.

When the Palette Deepens

Colour is one of the easiest ways to make a home feel ready for the season. Garnet red in particular is having its moment, bringing warmth and depth without feeling overly traditional.

At M&S, look to garnet-toned vessels in mid-century inspired shapes, alongside rich browns and speckled mosaic finishes. Then there are the softer layers: printed cushions and throws that can instantly make a sofa feel cosier, while giving you an easy way to introduce colour without committing to a complete makeover.

Chrome brings a little polish to this season’s deeper palette. Its cooler finish contrasts with the warm garnets and browns, while sculptural shapes add a subtle mid-century influence.

At H&M HOME, a three-armed silver candelabra brings height and interest to a dining table or sideboard, with spherical details that give it a sleek, contemporary feel.

Continue the rich colour story with burgundy and jewel-toned ceramics. Reactive glazes give vases an individual, slightly imperfect finish, adding another layer of texture to shelves, consoles and coffee tables.

Tip: Don’t be afraid to mix warm and cool tones. Chrome can make deeper autumnal shades feel surprisingly modern.

Set the Mood

As the days get shorter, lighting becomes part of the way we style our homes. Good lighting is about more than simply brightening a room; it creates atmosphere, highlights favourite corners and makes an evening at home feel that little bit more special.

Portable lamps are an easy way to introduce this softer glow. The Wanstead lamp from The White Company brings ambient light wherever it’s needed, without the distraction of trailing wires.

The Finishing Touches

Autumn is a particularly lovely time to style for all the senses, from the flicker of candlelight to the warming scents that make a space feel instantly more inviting.

At Primark HOME, candles in warming scents such as Blackcurrant & Vetiver bring a subtle richness to an evening at home, while Flying Tiger offers candlesticks in almost every colour imaginable. Mix different shades and heights for an arrangement that feels relaxed and collected rather than too perfectly matched.

Then there’s scent. Rituals brings an indulgent feel with fragrances including Suede Vanilla, Wild Fig and Precious Amber. These are the finishing touches that make a home feel as good as it looks.

Bring Personality to the Table

At John Lewis & Partners, colour and glassware make it easy to create a setting that feels warm, considered and full of personality.

Coloured plates add depth to the table, while amber glasses bring beautiful warmth. For something a little moodier, smoky drinking glasses introduce another layer of colour and texture, catching the candlelight beautifully.

It’s the kind of mix that feels collected rather than carefully coordinated, with different tones and finishes coming together to create a table made to be gathered round.

From deeper tones to softer lighting and thoughtful finishing touches, it’s all about creating a home that feels ready for autumn, in a way that feels entirely your own.

"Swap flowers for artichokes and let that gorgeous green set the tone. Who says vegetables can’t be beautiful? Even better, you can eat them afterwards."
