Off to Uni Essentials

Being a Uni student is an exciting time, meeting new people, making new friends and for many, living away from home and independently for the first time. Kitting out your student home might seem like a daunting task, so we have pulled together a few essentials and ideas to help you make sure you have everything you need and at prices that are easy on your pocket.

The first place to start is the kitchen. Cooking your own meals needn’t be a chore when you have the basic bits and pieces for a starter kitchen. Keep it simple and practical, so you will need a set of pans, some crockery and cutlery and probably most important of all, the kettle. Kettle from AnyDay at John Lewis & Partners, £20. Pans from John Lewis & Partners, £70. Crockery from M&S, £19.50.

Pick up some simple kitchen tools as well, serving spoons, spatulas and tongs are a good place to start. Before you know it, you will master some simple, affordable and tasty dishes. Kitchen Utensils from Primark, £2 each.

As a student, your bedroom will be one of your most important rooms. It will be a space where you can relax, hideaway when you want and feel like you have a little bit of home comfort, especially in a shared house or flat. Make the space your own, with some fresh bed linen and duvet set and get yourself a comfy dressing gown to relax in. You will be sure to have plenty of reading to do, so an adjustable desk lamp is a great idea too.

Bedding from Primark, £20. Dressing Gown from Next, £25-27. Lamp from AnyDay at John Lewis & Partners, £10.

If you need a bit of help with your meal planning, you might want to pick up a recipe book or two. There are a few out there catering specifically for students, so if you want easy, quick and nutritious meals on a budget, they can come in very handy. If you love your music, arguably one of the best and most fun parts of student life is socialising with lots of new friends, so a portable speaker is a good investment and if you pick up a waterproof version, you can even sing along in the shower to your favourite playlist.

Cookbook from WHSmith, £9.99. Speaker from John Lewis & Partners, £84.

But it’s not just about the parties, right? You will be putting in some hard work too, so there are those first day essentials for when you hit the campus. A notebook and refillable water bottle are a must for us to make your first day as stress-free as possible. Notebook from WHSmith, £7.50. Water Bottle from Typo, £15.
