A great tip for DIY feeders - the brown aerated clay granules from Gardening shops, that are water retaining, designed for use in greenhouses etc, make an ideal surface for open syrup feeders - They float on the syrup, but the bees can feed in the gaps, and walk on them without getting stuck/drowning in the syrup.
